How to Make a Chat-Style Lyric Video (Lyrics as Chat Bubbles)

Chat-style lyric videos are everywhere on K-pop and AI idol channels right now. Each lyric pops up as a message from the member who sings it, with their avatar, name and color, and a little "is typing…" bubble just before the next singer comes in. They look like a group chat, they are easy to follow, and viewers can see who sings each line.

They are also slow to make by hand. In CapCut or After Effects, every bubble is its own clip that you have to place, color and time. A three-minute song can easily mean a hundred bubbles.

The fastest way to make a chat-style lyric video is to have the bubbles built from your lyric timing, not keyframe them one by one. In ColorCoded AI Studio, you choose the Chat Neon or MV Chat starter, add your song, lyrics and members, and run Auto-sync. Every line then becomes a chat bubble from the right member at the right moment, and the "is typing…" indicator is added for you.

This guide walks through the whole workflow, from a blank project to an exported video.

What makes a chat-style lyric video work

The format works when it reads like a real conversation:

  • One line per bubble. Short, natural line breaks read like messages. Long lines read like a wall of text.
  • The right sender on every bubble. The avatar, name and color must match who is singing. A wrong sender is more obvious here than in a classic lyric video.
  • A few past bubbles stay on screen. Viewers can glance back at the last line or two, the way they would scroll up in a chat.
  • Timing that leads the vocal. The bubble should land as the line starts, with the "typing" cue a beat before a new singer.
  • A consistent frame. Fan channels reuse the same panel, colors and layout on every upload so the channel is recognizable.

Each of these comes from data you already have: the lyrics, the members, the line timing and who sings each line. That is why it can be automated.

Before you start

  • The song file. The audio you want in the video.
  • The lyrics, one line per bubble. If a line is split between two singers, break it where the voice changes. The guide to lyric line breaks for fast rap verses helps with dense parts.
  • Your members. Names, colors and photos for the avatars. If you still need colors, see how to choose a readable color coded lyrics palette.
  • Optional: a music video clip. For the MV Chat layout, have an mp4, webm or mov clip that you have the rights to use. A YouTube link can't be embedded in an exported video, so you need the file itself.

Step 1: Start a Studio video from a chat starter

Open Studio (Beta) from the sidebar and click New video. Enter the group or artist and the song title, then pick a starter:

  • Chat Neon: a neon member panel on the left (photos, names and singing time) with chat-bubble lyrics on the right.
  • MV Chat: the music video plays inside the neon panel on the left, with the same chat bubbles on the right.

Studio never opens on a blank canvas. The starter plays straight away with sample content, so you can see the finished look before you add anything. Studio videos are 16:9 for now.

Step 2: Add your song, lyrics and members

Click Add song. Upload the audio, paste the lyrics (one line per bubble) and add your members. These are the same upload, lyrics and member steps as the classic editor, so if you have made a ColorCoded video before, nothing here is new.

Once the song is in, the timeline at the bottom shows two tracks: Audio, with the waveform, and Lyrics, where each line is a block.

Step 3: Run Auto-sync to time the lines and find the singers

Click Auto-sync above the timeline. It times every line to the song and guesses where the voice changes, so the lines arrive grouped by singer. You then pick who sings each part instead of clicking line by line. The full routine, including the number-key shortcuts, is in how to assign singers to lyrics in a group song.

The AI hears that the voice changed, not whose voice it is. You always choose the member, so the sender on each bubble is your call.

Fix anything that is off directly on the timeline:

  • Drag the edge of a block to change when a line starts or ends.
  • Drag the whole block to move it.
  • Click a block to change who sings it. The block takes that member's color.

For duets and lines everyone sings together, assign every member who sings the line, so the roster credits each of them with the singing time.

Step 4: Tune the chat bubbles

Select the chat lyrics on the canvas. The inspector on the right shows quick looks first, with detailed settings below:

  • Past bubbles on screen: how many earlier messages stay visible. Two or three works well for most songs. Use fewer for fast songs so the newest bubble never feels cramped.
  • Color by member: tints each bubble in the singer's color. Turn it off for a cleaner, all-white chat with color only on the avatars and names.
  • Show translations: shows the translation under the original line, if your lyrics have one. For translation layouts, see how to make a lyric video with translations.
  • Font, size and corner radius: larger, bolder text reads better on phones, where most viewers will watch.

You don't need to set up the "{name} is typing…" cue. It appears automatically a moment before each new singer's message, using the name of whoever sings next.

Step 5: Add your music video clip (MV Chat)

With MV Chat, select the music video in the left panel and click Upload video clip. Then:

  • Use Move clip on canvas to frame the clip. A 16:9 music video in a tall panel needs cropping, so drag it until the part you want (usually the faces) is centered, then click Done moving clip.
  • Set Clip starts at to choose which second of the clip plays at 0:00, so the visuals match the song.
  • Leave Play the clip's own sound off unless you want the clip's audio mixed in. Usually the song track is all you need.

Short clips loop, so a 30-second clip still fills a full song.

Step 6: Make it your channel's look

Everything on the canvas is an element you can move, resize or restyle: the neon frame, the member roster, the singer spotlight, title text and your logo. Text elements accept {title} and {artist}, which fill in from each song automatically, so a title card never needs retyping.

When you like the result, save it as a template. Your next video starts from that template, and you only swap the song, lyrics and members. That way every upload on your channel has the same frame.

On Pro, the AI tab can also build the look for you. Attach a screenshot of one of your existing videos, and it rebuilds that layout with Studio elements. You can then ask for changes in plain words, like "make the bubbles bigger" or "use a pink neon frame".

Step 7: Check and export

Play the video through once with headphones and watch for three things:

  1. A bubble from the wrong member, usually at a quick handoff.
  2. A bubble that lands late on a fast line.
  3. Long lines that wrap into a tall bubble. Split them in the lyrics.

Our lyric video QA checklist covers the rest. Then click Export. The video renders in your browser, with nothing to install. Free exports carry a watermark; Pro exports are clean.

Common chat-style lyric video mistakes

  • Too many bubbles on screen. Past four, the newest line gets small and the screen gets busy. Keep the history short.
  • Overly long lines. A chat bubble should read in about a second. Break long lines into two messages.
  • Similar member colors. If two members share a hue, their bubbles blur together. Pick colors that are clearly different on a dark background.
  • Using footage you can't use. Upload only clips you have the rights to. Re-uploaded music videos are the most common cause of Content ID claims on lyric channels.

FAQ

Can I make a chat-style lyric video for free? Yes. Studio, the starters, all elements and the preview are available on the free plan, and you can save one template. Free exports have a watermark, and the AI channel templates are Pro only.

Can I use a YouTube link for the music video? No. A YouTube video can't be captured into an exported video, so upload a clip file instead.

Does it work for solo artists? Yes. Add a single member and every bubble comes from them. For solo songs with featured artists, add the featured artist as a second member.

Can I make vertical chat-style videos for Shorts? Studio is 16:9 for now. For Shorts, Reels and TikTok, see the vertical lyric video maker guide.

Ready to try it? Open Studio (Beta), pick Chat Neon or MV Chat, and let Auto-sync turn your lyrics into a group chat.
